Sliver: Day 52

Posted by Claudia (Illinois, United States) on 26 June 2009 in Plant & Nature.

Saw my chance to capture just a sliver of the moon tonight so I ran inside and grabbed my camera. I cropped the heck out of it :) but was pleased to see the clarity since I did not use a tripod.

Thank you for stopping by and taking time to view my photos. If you have a few extra moments, please leave a comment--they are sincerely appreciated!

Barbara from Florida, United States

Outstanding detail. Incredible clarity without a tripod. Cropped or not it's a great shot.

@Barbara: Thank you, Barbara!

M4 from Durham, NC, United States

great shot. what did you shoot this with?

26 Jun 2009 7:55am

@M4: Thanks so much, M4! I used a Canon EF 70 - 300 mm (the lens has an Image Stabilizer).

Leslie from Penang, Malaysia

it's a nice shot! without a tripod...great pair of hands you have :)

26 Jun 2009 9:28am

@Leslie: Thank you, Leslie. And yes, my hands are magical! :) :) (teasing of course!)

Lorraine from Gatineau, Canada

It is superb, I wouldn't want to miss that exquisite moment, by running into the house to get the tripod and missing this fantastic moon photo ;)

26 Jun 2009 10:55am

@Lorraine: Thank you, Lorraine. I'm actually a mess with a tripod. I am all joints and elbows flying every which way and I miss the shot so my motto is, "if I can't take it hand-held, then I won't take it!" (that sounds like the mantra of a lazy photographer doesn't it? :)

Sarito from Basingstoke, United Kingdom

Superb shot..

@Sarito: Thank you, Sarito, and thanks for visiting!

Simply Col from Winnipeg, Canada

Wow... this is simply beautiful. And not easily done... I know that from my several unsuccessful attempts. :-)

26 Jun 2009 6:06pm

@Simply Col: Aw, thanks so much, SimplyC. One good thing about the moon is that we get plenty of opportunities to practice. :)

Bill from Belton, United States

Excellent detail Claudia! And a perfect crop.... just right. You must be younger than I am.. I wouldn't have such great results handheld!

26 Jun 2009 6:30pm

@Bill: Thanks, Bill. I'm 42 so while I am certainly not ancient I do have to admit that the Image Stabiliazer in my lens has been a life saver! :)

ZoomLNZ from Los Angeles Area, United States

Wow, what a great photo - and without a tripod. What was your focal length and ISO setting? Great shot!

26 Jun 2009 10:09pm

@ZoomLNZ: Hey, Zoom, Thanks for stopping by! Here is my info: Canon EOS Kiss X2 1/100 second F/5.6 ISO 400 260 mm I started with the Sunny 16 rule with my manual settings b/c the moon is nothing more than sunlight reflecting off of it but since it was only a sliver of a moon, I stopped down quite a bit until I got the exposure that worked for me.

Jim Wilson from United Kingdom

Nice shot Cladia, great detail, nice one !!
Regards Jim

26 Jun 2009 10:17pm

@Jim Wilson: Thanks, Jim! THanks for your visit!

Jen from St. George, United States

Great shot! I like the crop - it's a great composition. My question - how the heck did you do that without a tripod?! :)

26 Jun 2009 10:39pm

@Jen: Hahaha! I held my breath and I relied on my lens' Image Stabilizer. Thanks for the kind words!

PD from Overland Park, Kansas, United States

That is great detail - what size lens did you use?-- OH I see from your earlier comment. Great job!

27 Jun 2009 12:11am

@PD: Thanks, PD!

Bethany from Michigan, United States

What a great shot for having no tripod... I am impressed!

27 Jun 2009 1:08am

@Bethany: Thanks much, Bethany. I really do have to give credit to the lens' image stabilizer. ;)

Lorraine from Gatineau, Canada

I confesss it's my mantra too shhh don't tell anyone ;)

27 Jun 2009 10:26am

@Lorraine: OH, that is so nice to hear, Lorraine! :) People make you feel like something is wrong with you if you don't lug a tripod everywhere you go. Thanks for the kind comment!
