Tiny Town: Day 56Posted by Claudia (Illinois, United States) on 30 June 2009 in Cityscape & Urban and Portfolio. I was playing around in Photoshop tonight and tried to simulate a tilt-shift effect by following some tutorial on the internet. I don't have patience for masks and layers. :) This is a photo I took of the Chicago River from the top of the Sears Tower. Barbara from Florida, United StatesClaudia, this is perfection for tilt shift. It really looked like a miniature model of a city. The red buildings on the left really fool the eye like the entire image. 30 Jun 2009 5:29am @Barbara: Thanks so much, Barbara. Can't wait to see what you come up with! Sarito from Basingstoke, United KingdomOh my goodness, this is great! you have done an excellent job! 30 Jun 2009 7:26am @Sarito: Thank you very much, Sarito! Lorraine from Gatineau, CanadaLOL fun, fun, fun, it looks almost like a Lego world ;) well done Claudia ;) 30 Jun 2009 8:09am @Lorraine: Thank you, Lorraine! You are right, too--it does look a bit like a Lego World or Legoland. LESLIE from norwich, United KingdomWOW Claudia, this is great - love it , agree with Lorraine it does look like Legoland as we call it here in UK 30 Jun 2009 12:23pm @LESLIE: Thanks so much, Les! We call them Legolands here in the USA, too. 'Lego World' must be some weird Canadian term. ;) heh heh Chris Parr from Jefferson City, United StatesThis is really somethng. I was sure I was looking at a model. 30 Jun 2009 12:37pm @Chris Parr: Thanks, Chris. I'm glad I fooled you for a sec! @bekkah: Thanks much, Bekkah, and thanks for visiting! ZoomLNZ from Los Angeles Area, United StatesWow, it looks like a well constructed miniature set. Good shot. 30 Jun 2009 2:02pm @ZoomLNZ: Thank you very much, ZoomLNZ! :) PD from Overland Park, Kansas, United StatesOK, is this a model or not? I guess the focus/DOF makes it look like a model - but the water looks real and gives it away. How did you do this effect? Very cool 30 Jun 2009 2:35pm @PD: Hey PD...almost gotchya but yes, it is a real photo. I know there are real tilt-shift lenses that create this effect but if you are looking for a cheap alternative you can create the effect in Photoshop. I used the tutorial here:http://martybugs.net/blog/blog.cgi/photoshop/tutorials/TiltShiftTutorial.html This was my fist attempt and I can make many improvements, I'm sure but it was fun to try. If you Google 'tilt-shift photos' you will find some incredible ones that will amaze and amuse. @Marzieh: Thank you, Marzieh, and thanks for visiting! @Onlymehdi: Thank you, thank you, thank you. :) @Walala: Muchas Gracias, Walala! MJ from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysiawow...this really looks like a miniature scale model! i've been playing with this effect too but never really got the effect i wanted. awesome job! 1 Jul 2009 2:27am @MJ: Hey, thanks MJ and thank you for stopping by! :) Bill from Belton, United StatesLookin' good Claudia! If I did something right, it was all by accident! ;) Anthony Morgan Lambert from Bielefeld(old Pembroke dock boy,Wales), GermanyA nicely done tilt shift,I´ve done some of this myself before and seeing this image justs makes me want to do some more. 1 Jul 2009 4:48pm @Anthony Morgan Lambert: Thanks, Anthony. I'd love to see some of your tilt-shift images. Keep me posted! Anthony Morgan Lambert from Bielefeld(old Pembroke dock boy,Wales), GermanyClick on my portfolio Claudia you should find 3 tilt shift images from recent weeks.I´ll maybe do a few more in the near future.I always used an out of focus forground and background leaving the middle section in focus.I see you left the forground in focus and that also works really well. 2 Jul 2009 1:34pm @Anthony Morgan Lambert: I saw them, Anthony--they are wonderful! I remember the first internet tutorial I found on the tilt-shift effect was more along the lines of what you do. However, when I went to find it again, I couldn't no matter how many searches I did. I ended up using a different technique with the gradient tool in PS. I'm going to try your way again. I think when the foreground and background are both blurred, it looks more like a model b/c it implies that you have a much smaller space that you are focussing on since the model is not life-sized. Loved looking at the rest of your portfolio, as well. @Aaron: Thanks, Aaron! :) Robert Smith from Phillipsburg, United StatesWOW! Fantastic image. I thought this was an actual model. The perspective and detail is perfect. Well done. 16 Jul 2009 4:26pm @Robert Smith: Hey, thank you so much, Robert. Thanks for visiting my blog! Dick Berry from Ssaint Joseph, United StatesAwesome tilt-shift image-Very nice post-processing work!
