Shake Your Monkey!: Day 59

Posted by Claudia (Illinois, United States) on 3 July 2009 in Animal & Insect.

Wish I had been able to take a bettter quality picture of this. *sigh* Trudy has a toy stuffed monkey. If I say, "Trudy, shake your monkey!" She finds it on her playstand, picks it up and starts shaking the bajeezus out of it. It's hilarious to watch. When she has shaken it to her satisfaction she will fling it from her and send it flying to the ground. Sometimes, if she is feeling particularly sassy, she will dunk him in her water dish until he is perfectly soggy and then she will drop him over the edge of her playstand. Plop.

What a laugh you gave me on this one, and a perfect title. As they say Quaker's are really sociable birds. What you wrote about Trudy tossing her monkey to the ground must be a Quaker thing, although mine waits until I serve him treats of corn or pasta on top of his cage, when finish he flings it across the room.
I love the part about giving the monkey a dunk in the water dish.
What fun you are having with Trudy.
A side note, I learned this past week that Quaker has gone blind in one eye. A week ago is the first time I saw the clouding cataract in his eye. But for some time now I've seen signs of something going on like he didn't see things but not certain what it was, it did not seem obvious to be his eye.
At 25 or 26 years old he has been in perfect health.

@Barbara: Barb--I can't tell you how much I love having this bird. But then, I know that you understand perfectly. I am SO sorry to hear about Quaker's eye but at 26 years old, if that is his biggest ailment he is doing wonderfully and he is one lucky bird! That is so funny about him flinging his pasta and corn across the room. I think non-bird owners would be shocked to learn how amazingly smart these creatures are. Im sure Quaker gets a big chuckle out of flinging his food around and watching you pick it up! :) I'll keep my fingers crossed for his health!

Chris Parr from Jefferson City, United States

How funny! I never knew birds had such personality.

5 Jul 2009 5:08pm

@Chris Parr: Chris, it is actually amazing how much personality Trudy has. I knew birds were amazing b/c I have friends who own birds and I have always heard funny stories but I was always a bit terrified of owning a bird. When we got Trudy it changed everything. She has a great sense of humor and she will scream in my ear. If I say "Ouch!" She will laugh. She loves to get reactions out of people. A few days ago she was on her playstand and all of a sudden I heard her say, "I want a drink" I was stunned. I filled her water dish and before I put it back on her stand she said it 2 more times, "I want a drink" Shows you how smart she is. I have said to her, "Do you want a drink?" but she actually used the possessive pronoun "I" and made the sentence herself. She was happy when the water arrived and had a few sips. :)
