Pastoral Delight (thanks Lorraine!): Day 62

Posted by Claudia (Illinois, United States) on 6 July 2009 in Plant & Nature.

Tree and flowers in a chuch parking lot near one of my sister's houses.

**I will preface this by saying that I am very much aware that there are tragic things going on all over this world of ours. I know there are people suffereing devastating heartaches and horrible fates. With that said, I must share that I am absolutely beside myself and depressed tonight. I was taking my backpack out of the back seat of the car today and the zipper caught on the door and as I pulled, the bag opened and I heard the most awful sound of plastic and glass shattering as my camera and 3 of my lenses smashed onto the cement garage floor and rolled under the car. I froze. I did not move for a good 15 seconds, too terrified to look down and veiw the scene.

OK, I won't make this any more dramatic but I am not sure if my camera can be saved. I think I may have lost 2 lenses, too---my 70 - 300 mm and my lovely wide angle--17 - 24 mm. I can hardly think about it. As I type this, the backpack is downstairs on the diningroom table. I'm afraid to open it again. I checked over everytrhing right after the incident but I have not been able to open the backpack since.

So, while I know that other people are suffeing far worse fates than I am, this is my personal tragedy for this day and if you took the time to read this...thank you. Thanks for letting me vent and cry if only through my computer keyboard.

Thank you for stopping by and taking time to view my photos. If you have a few extra moments, please leave a comment--they are sincerely appreciated!

Frissons from No City, France

absolutely beautifull! The flowers at the bottom of the tree are just a beautifull framing to it.

@Frissons: Thank you so much, Frissons. The flowers were what first attacted me to this spot and then I noticed how great that tree looked, too! :)

LESLIE from norwich, United Kingdom

Oh Claudia, i am so sorry to hear your sad news. I do hope that you can save some of your gear... If i was a lot closer i could let you have my back up body (Fuji S2 Pro) ... Les

6 Jul 2009 7:32am

@LESLIE: Thanks for the sympathy, Les, and especially for telling me you'd let me have your back-up body (Ha! I just realized how wrong that sounds!). Even if I lived closer, I'd never let you give it to me but it's actually really wonderful to know you'd offer. :) :)

Sarito from Basingstoke, United Kingdom

Oh no.. sorry to hear this Claudia. Hope you can rescue some of it atleast. For someone who loves photography this is very sad, all I can say is take it easy.

@Sarito: Thanks for feeling my pain, Sarito! Glad you stopped by. :)

Lorraine from Gatineau, Canada

'Pastoral Delight' no doubt, it's amazing, you can use the title ;) are you kidding, that's the worse thing that can ever happen to a photographer...but fear not, I found that when this happens (I'm very tough on my material, so you can imagine...) it's because you're called to a better fit...don't ask how it happens, it just does, wait and see ! x in the meantime, big hugs !

@Lorraine: Thanks so much, Lorraine! I actually told my family that I was going down to the nearest street corner to sell my 'goods' to anyone who was willing to pay and I was going to, by hook or crook, make enough money to go buy a new camera and lenses! LOL. I haven't gone down to the corner yet and reading your words makes me feel better like yes, maybe I AM supposed to go furhter in debt and buy a new and better camera! :) I do want a full frame DSLR but that is just a distant dream of mine at the moment. *sigh* On a happier note, thanks for your kind comment and for the title suggestion. I love it and I will use it!

Chris Parr from Jefferson City, United States

Wonderful image Claudia. I hope your rig isn't as banged up as you initially thought. I'll have my fingers crossed for a positive outcome!

@Chris Parr: Thanks so much for your comment Chris and thanks for keeping your fingers crossed for me. I really need to go down there and look in that backpack today but I have been avoiding it. ugh.

PD from Overland Park, Kansas, United States

Sorry to hear about your mishap. Shortly after I got my 70-300mm zoom, I dropped it onto asphalt. It was in the case, but when I took it out I found shattered glass. Fortunately, it was only the UV filter that shattered. I cleaned it up, and it appears to work. I hope yours turns out as well.

@PD: Thanks much, PD. Your story gives me hope! :)

@bekkah: Thank you for your sympathy and your kind comment, bekkah. :)

Barbara from Florida, United States

Oh Claudia!! So sorry!
But I do have to commend you. You handle the situation...........................................................................Just like I would have. Exactly, right down to the part where you froze and can't go back to take a look.
When thens happens the odds are it usually isn't as bad as you first thought when you do go back and look.

Another thing is over the 4th of July weekend my cellphone came off my waistband by accident and fell into the Gulf of Mexico, I thought it was terrible such a fluke of a thing the way it happened. Like your situation it was a fluke the bag caught on the car door. My phone (much cheaper I know) was not retrievable but I do hope your camera and lenses are.

Otherwise I really wish there was a way each of us could send in a donation, a few dollars a piece to help out. Quaker would even donate a few.

Hang in there, things will change for the better.

7 Jul 2009 5:41pm

@Barbara: What a pair we'd make, huh? Dropping our phones and our cameras all over the place. :) I'm sorry to hear about your phone but I"m SO very glad it was not your camera that fell into the gulf! When I was in Ireland many years ago, my friend dropped my 35mm into Galway Bay. Ugh. Thanks for your kind words and thoughts, Barb. I finally managed to get my camera out today and take a closer look and you are right....it does not appear to be as bad as I had first feared! :) :)
